CNC machining FAQ: the questions we get most
The questions we get most by phone and WhatsApp, answered straight.
Before you request a quote
How long does it take to get a quote?
Under 24 business hours once we receive a legible print or a 3D model. If the project needs design work first, we confirm within that same window how long the technical proposal will take.
What files do you need to quote?
We work with PDF, DWG, DXF, STEP, IGES, SLDPRT and Parasolid. If all you have is a photo or the physical part, we can start there too: we take the dimensions and produce the drawing.
Is there a minimum order quantity?
No. We machine from a single piece. In fact, a large share of our work is one-off spares and prototypes that no volume supplier wants to take.
Do you deliver into the United States?
Yes. We coordinate crossings into San Diego and Southern California with export paperwork in order. We also deliver on-site in Tijuana, Tecate, Rosarito, Ensenada and Mexicali.
Do you sign NDAs?
Yes, and we sign before receiving your files. Your prints, models and tooling are never shown to third parties or reused on other projects.
Production, quality and delivery
What tolerances can you hold?
It depends on material, geometry and process. On precision work we routinely hold tolerances in the ±0.0005" (±0.013 mm) range; if your print demands more, we review it before committing.
Do you include heat treatment and finishing?
Yes. Hardening and tempering are done in house, and we coordinate anodizing, black oxide, nickel, chrome, zinc and powder coating within the same lead time, so you do not have to chase another supplier.
Can you copy a spare that is no longer available?
It is one of the jobs we do most. Bring the worn part, even if it is broken: we take the dimensions, rebuild the design, propose the material and reproduce it.
Do you provide an inspection report?
Yes. Every part goes through dimensional control and, when the customer requests it, we deliver a first-article or lot report using calibrated, traceable instruments.
Do you handle emergencies outside business hours?
When a line is down, yes. Message us on WhatsApp describing the failure and we confirm immediately whether we can open an emergency run.
Questions by service
CNC Machining
Can you machine from a PDF with no 3D model?
Yes. If the drawing is dimensioned and legible, our design department builds the 3D model and programs from there, with no additional modeling charge on most parts.
What if my print carries a tolerance that is not needed?
We tell you before quoting. A tight tolerance that adds no function raises the price for no reason; we would rather propose the change and let you decide.
Precision machining
What tolerance is realistic for my part?
It depends on material, size and geometry: a long aluminum plate moves more than a short stainless bushing. We review your print and tell you what we can hold repeatably before committing to a date.
Can you inspect an entire run at 100 %?
Yes, on critical characteristics. We state the impact on time and cost in the quote so you can choose between sampling and full inspection.
Die sets and cutting tooling
Can you service a die you did not build?
Yes. We tear it down, measure clearances and wear, resharpen what is recoverable and manufacture only the elements that no longer meet spec.
What hardness do the punches ship at?
It depends on the steel and the application. We define hardening and tempering by the material being cut and the expected volume, and the written specification ships with the tooling.
Assembly fixtures
I only have an idea on paper, can you work from that?
That is how most of our fixtures start. With a sketch and the part it will hold, our design department proposes the complete device and you approve before we build.
Can you modify an existing fixture for a new part number?
Yes, and it is almost always cheaper than building a new one. We analyze what can be kept and change only locators and clamping.
Design-based machining & reverse engineering
Is the design charged separately?
On most projects that end in manufacturing, design is folded into the part cost. If you only need the model and the print, we quote it separately and the files are yours to keep.
Who owns the files you produce?
You do. The model and drawing of a part designed for you are handed over and never reused with third parties.
Welded structures
Can you weld stainless without staining it?
Yes. We use TIG with the right filler and shielding gas, back-purging when the application calls for it, and we passivate the heat-affected zone so the stainless keeps its corrosion resistance.
Can you machine the structure after welding it?
That is exactly what separates this from a general fab job. We weld, relieve stress and then machine the critical faces for real flatness and position.
Cutting tool sharpening
How many times can an end mill be resharpened?
It depends on diameter, wear and geometry. A carbide end mill usually takes several resharpenings before losing usable length; we inspect it and tell you whether sharpening is worthwhile or it is time to replace it.
Do you sharpen tooling I did not buy from you?
Yes, we sharpen tooling of any origin and brand as long as the geometry is recoverable.
Treatments and special finishes
Does the coating change the part's dimension?
It does, which is why it is accounted for at the machining stage. Hard anodizing and nickel add thickness; we leave the planned allowance so the part measures correctly once finished, not before.
How much does finishing add to the lead time?
We state it in the quote, because it depends on the process. Generally hardening does not move the date and external coatings add two to four business days.
Industrial laser engraving
Does engraving affect the part's strength?
In practice, no: the laser marks the surface without removing meaningful material. Even so, we avoid marking in stress-concentration zones and suggest a safe location if the print does not specify one.
Can you engrave parts you did not machine?
Yes. We accept finished parts for marking, including anodized or painted ones.
Metrology and dimensional inspection
Are your instruments calibrated?
Yes, with current, traceable calibration. The instrument record appears on every report we issue.
Can you inspect a lot I bought from another supplier?
Yes. We do it often when a plant and a supplier disagree and an independent written disposition is needed.
Do you have a print ready for quoting?
Send your drawing in PDF, STEP, IGES or DXF and get a technical and commercial proposal in under 24 business hours.
